Keigo Higashino Mystery show episode 5 synopsis and review
Episode 5 was a decent watch, the only real problem with it though it wan't a mystery show, would have made for a good TV movie or an episode from a regular drama but was lacking in suspense as it was easy to figure out in the beginning what really happened.
Naomi(Ai) and Nobuhiko(Takashi) are newleyweds on a trip to Okinawa but they it didn't turn out to be a very happy trip as it was the first anniversary of the death of Nobuhiko's 6 year old daughter, Hiroko, should be noted that it wasn't her daughter and they weren't married yet at the time of her death. Many flashbacks they both had on what happened on the day of the death, she died from carbon monoxide poisoning but exactly how did this happen? The chain of events that day was Nobuhiko dashing off to a store to send a fax to his emplyer, he had expected to be gone for only a few minutes but while sending the fax the store was held up and her suffered a blow to the head which sent him to the hospital. Before he had left the house the pair was suffering in the cold as the heat had gone out, they hooked up a kersoene heater but before he left he had made sure it was turned off and it was. But the police ruled that the death had been caused by the heater which left his confused, the only thing that could have happened was that Naomi had to have turned it on, which she did but not for the reasons he had imagined.
What really happened was that Nobuhiko was going to ride his motorcycle to work but the boss said not to come but to just fax the papers they needed. However he got the phine call from his boss as he was warmong up his bike in the garage and in his hurry to go to the store he forgot to turn the engine off. After he had left Naomi came over to a house full of carbon monoxide, it was too late to save Hiroko so she devised a plan to pull the blame away from Nobuhiko. She turned off the bike, pit the kerosene heater back on which led the police to think that was the cause of his daughter's death, Naomi never told him what she did so he secretly had been thinking that she had come back to the house, turned the heater on and killed his daughter. It never came out exactly what happened until late in the show when he was able to figure ot out with some help from an old coule they had met and befriended on their trip, he was able to see it was him who had caused the death but not before a tense moment where he had come close to killing Naomi, but once the truth came out all was well and a happy ending for all.
Few more spoliers than I usually put in these posts but the truth on what really caused the death of the little girl had come out in the beginning, we knew what happened but poor Nobuhiko didn't until the very end. As mentioned it was a good watch but there wasn't much a mystery about this episode nor was there much suspense either as we knew a bit too early what really happened. Still would recommend this just wasn't what you expect in a mystery drama, also a very small cast, really the only two major characters were Ai Kato and Takashi Sorimachi who both did a good job and you can see many screenshots of them in the next post.
