There are four time periods in this series, 2006 when the two main characters were fifteen and had gone by different names. Then the action resumes in the year of 2011 when Na-Moo, now known as Do-Jin, enrolled at the police academy and that year was told to us viewers. But after that the year could be anywhere from 2012 to 2015 when he graduates from the academy. Think most of today's action took place in 2015 but that's only something I learned from watching the next two episodes. Have mentioned it many times but the jumping back and forth with these time frames can be a bit confusing. At the top is a scene from these two episodes which shows the first time Do-Jin and
Nak-Won get reacquainted after not seeing each other for nine(?) years.

No cliffhanger to end off the previous show but episode five began with an issue that had been developing and the year is 2006. The setting is the local courthouse and the brother of Na-Moo
Hyun-Moo is on trial for the beating of a fellow high school student. That student was severely beat as he ended up being in the hospital for two months and if it wasn't for Nak-Won's brother calling 911 the boy may have died. That student's family is in the court and they want to see some harsh justice meted out to Hyun-Moo and the judge readily agreed with them.
Though Hyun-Moo is just seventeen he's been in trouble before and was on probation. Because of that and his bullying ways around town the judge sentenced him to two years hard labor at a prison for juvenile delinquents which shocked Hyun-Moo to no end. Na-Moo was also at the courthouse and he didn't seem too stunned by the decision and may have been glad to see his brother being sent away. Na-Moo is an upstanding, studious young man who has the potential for a bright future but will the evil ways of his family prevent that? At the courthouse he did try to apologize for his brother's inexcusable actions which was rebuffed sternly by the victim's family who said that Na-Moo one day would end up like his brother.
While that was going on at Na-Moo's house his father's second wife Ok-Hee had returned knowing her husband Hui-Jee wasn't there, she's been estranged from him for a while. In the previous recap she had witnessed Hui-Jee throwing objects into a fire, not just any objects but human body parts! Ok-Hee didn't see the murder but had a good idea of what happened and now her main goal was to whisk her nine year old daughter So-Jin away from the house. Ok-Hee was able to convince her daughter to flee with her and they had better hurry before Hui-Jee returned home.
But as they were rushing away they bumped into Na-Moo who was returning form the courthouse. So-Jin isn't his real sister but he's closer to her than anyone else in the family. Of course he would be heartbroken to see her go but also realized it was for the little girl's safety so he told the pair to hurry and would cover up for them when his father returned. It's getting to be a small household for
Na-Moo as it's gone from five to two people, first his new mother had left, then his brother had been sent to prison and now his sister is fleeing with her mother. That just leaves him with Hui-Jee and he has to be at the bottom of any list of people you'd want to live alone with.

The mother and daughter had fled to Chugae island where they were still living at the end of the eighth episode. Of course Hui-Jee was in a rage when he came home to learn his son was now in prison and his estranged wife had left with her daughter. But that was the last we saw of anything from that year as the action now jumps forward in years, sometime between 2012-15 and actually think the years keep changing.
Na-Moo is now enrolled at the police academy and goes by the name of Chae Do-Jin, Chae was the name of his adopted mother and not sure yet why he changed his given name. With 26 episodes to go many details still need to be explained to us but the main reason for Do-Jin enrolling at the academy was to atone for his father's twelve murders but how do you atone for that many? He's not well liked at the academy as Do-Jin's true identity eventually was revealed and most students just try to avoid him but think because of that Do-Jin may have turned into the best student.
But there is one female student interested in the quiet, hard working Do-Jin who is in the above screenshot and her name is Lee Yeon-Ji. In real life her name is Lee Da-In who is someone I've been aware of and just may have to do a post or two for. Seems as though Yeon-Ji has a slight crush on
Do-Jin and asked him to help her with her physical training. Been watching these training scenes and it seems more like a military boot camp than a police academy. Yeon-Ji pops in often during these next three episodes but so far her role hasn't been too important but have a feeling that will change.

As I've mentioned too many times the time period Do-Jin was at the academy wasn't explained so well, the above scene with Yeon-Ji could have taken place any time between 2012 to 2014. But now I know for the rest of this recap the year is 2015 and only learned that from watching the seventh episode!!!! Finally and I mean finally, we get to see the main reason for me watching this drama and it's because of Ki-Joo. Halfway through episode five is when her per role becomes a full time one, it's about time too as she has the lead female role in this series.
Her character's name is Jae-Yi but like Do-Jin after the murders of her parents she changed her name from Nak-Won. In the next recap we'll begin seeing her brother who still calls her Nak-Won and not sure why Do-Jin's father didn't kill him too. Jae-Yi's mother was a very popular actress and like her Jae-Yi has followed in her footsteps as she too is an actress, would peg her current age to be 24 in the year 2015. But unlike her mother Jae-Yi has struggled in the acting field but is slowly getting bigger parts, for now there's not one person who knows her true identity.
Jae-Yi is currently in the very popular drama "Secret Love in Seoul" though her role isn't a large one. The main star of the show is Se-Kyung who is in her mid thirties and for some reason truly despises Jae-Yi. Se-Kyung constantly tries to undermine her work such as sending her on errands when a filming scene will be taking place shortly or not waking her up for interviews. To me Se-Kyung doesn't have much confidence in herself even though she's a popular actress, she's really suspicious of others taking her roles and perhaps she's a little leery of Jae-Yi's talent and hard work.
As mentioned the true identity of Jae-Yi hasn't been revealed but it will soon and the whole avalanche of her past seemed to begin when Se-Kyung sent her out for coffees. At the cafe she was noticed by a few customers, they didn't know Jae-Yi's name but had recalled seeing her in the "Secret Love in Seoul" drama. As Jae-Yi was taking pictures with the fans there was a TV newscast which caught her attention. It was of the serial killer Hui-Jee and he's written an autobiography of his killing spree which has drawn an uproar from the public. When Jae-Yi saw the news she screamed in terror and dropped her order of coffee, soon things will get much worse for her.

Every now and again we see short flashbacks of the gruesome night when Nak-Won's parents were murdered, that middle screenshot above is from that night. But in the seventh show we finally saw a longer scene of what took place but really wishing we'll see an entire scene from start to finish of what really happened. Now that Do-Jin's evil father Hui-Jee has released his autobiography "I Am Not Unlike You" the attention has turned to the survivors and others involved with Do-Jin being the most sought after person as it was his father who did the killings.
Above is a new character we met in the sixth episode and what an irritating person she is. She's a reporter for the 'Lady Focus' magazine and her name is Han Ji-Ho, we see a lot of her to end this show off and also in the next two episodes. She knew about Do-Jin attending the police academy and rushed there once his father's book has been released. However there's a mob scene there as other reporters have learned about Do-Jin plus at the academy the popular drama "Secret Love in Seoul" is filming a scene, yes that means Jae-Yi will be there.
Eventually some of the reporters including Han have been allowed onto the grounds but they're unable to talk to Do-Jin as he's leading his cadets doing marches for the drama. Though most other trainees at the academy aren't friendly to Do-Jin because of his father he's moved up in ranks and appears to be #1 in his class, after four years he hasn't graduated yet? As mentioned also at the academy was Jae-Yi who wasn't there to film any scenes but to head a promo event which was to thank the viewers as the drama has averaged over a 20% rating.
Han spotted Jae-Yi and rushed up to her as she somehow has also learned about her past and as you can see above she asked if her real name was once Nak-Won. Even with her manager there the crowd was too much for Jae-Yi to handle plus the pressure of Han's questions began upsetting her so much.
Jae-Yi refused to answer any questions and attempted to flee the scene but the horde of reporters was too huge for her to break through as Jae-Yi stumbled to the ground with a mass of cameras and microphones in her face.
But of all people who should arrive to save her but.... Do-Jin! Of course that was going to happen and he was aware of Jae-Yi becoming an actress as he had seen her picture on a vending machine at the academy as she's also a part time model. Jae-Yi had no clue about what happened to her best friend and stood there in shock as she stared at Do-Jin who quickly wrapped his arms around her to protect Jae-Yi from the reporters as he ordered them to turn off their recorders. With that somewhat dramatic scene this recap comes to it's end and will say this drama is slowly improving.

This drama has turned into a much better view once the confusion of the time periods dwindled. After the first few episodes didn't think I'd be able to go on and wasn't even planning on having these recaps. But now that many details have been cleared up it's turning into a decent show but there's still many other details to be learned. Not much more to add in as let's move on the the next two episodes which are in the post following this. Will say that Ki-Joo is looking more than oki doki, whewwww!
