"Do You Like Brahms?" drama: Episodes five and six recap

Air Dates: August 31st until October 20, 2020  Monday and Tuesdays at 10:00 pm on SBS
Ratings for these two episodes, 4.5 and 5.6%

Main Cast: The college referred to is Seoryeong University, a very prestigious music school though it does have many other programs.

Park Eun-Bin as Chae Song-Ah.... 'Chae' sounds quite a bit like the Korean word for sorry and she constantly has to tell others it's her real name. Song-Ah is 29 and graduated from the university at 22 with a business degree. However she hasn't had a steady job since then as her first love was playing the violin. After four attempts she was finally accepted into the school's musical program, she's finished three years yet is still not a very accomplished player.

Kim Min-Jae as Park Joon-Young.... He's an award winning pianist and the same age as
Song-Ah. He too graduated from Seoryeong University and for many years has been touring the world performing concerts. He's a very respected pianist yet has returned to the university for their graduate program but see no reason why.

Lee You-Jin as Yoon Dong-Yun.... Friend of Song-Ah's and went out briefly with Min-Seong. We didn't see him in this first episode as he was in Italy but has just returned in this show. He owns a violin shop though doesn't play much these days.

Bae Da-Bin as Kang Min-Seong.... Song-Ah's best friend who is going to the same college, she's getting her Masters in Chemistry.

Park Ji-Hyun as Lee Jung-Kyung.... She's just returned from America where she tried so hard to become a professor of music at some colleges but failed. She's a violinist whose mother died when she was fourteen, she's been semi-dating Hyun-Ho though she secretly wishes to be with Joog-Young

Kim Seong Cheol as Han Hyun-Ho.... He too has just returned from America and is a talented cello player. He's best friends with Joon-Young and has been dating Jung-Kyung but he's more serious about their relationship than she is.

Lee Ji-Won as Kim Ha-Nae....Also a violinist who is seven years younger than Song-Ah but both have just started at a Summer internship for the Kyunghoo Foundation.

Seo Jung-Yeon as Cha Young-In.... Manager of Song-Ah and Ha-Nae at the foundation.

Choi Dae-Hoon as Park Sung-Jae.... Employee at the foundation.

Ahn Sang-Ein as Jung Da-Woon..... Another foundation employee

Ye Soo-Young as Na Moon-Sook.... Director of the Kyunghoo Foundation and whose daughter died in 2006 who was the mother of Jung-Kyung.

Yoon Chan-Young as Seung Ji-Min.... Very talented younger popular pianist

Added in a few new characters in the above cast list and also did a bit of tweeking for the mini bios.
The ratings for these two shows translated to a little over a million viewers which beat the first pair of episodes by well over a hundred thousand. As is the case for Japanese dramas Korean shows still draw a fair amount of viewers but not nearly the amount from five or so years ago.

Kind of dreading writing up drama recaps these days though it's not because this hasn't been a fine show for it has. But as mentioned a few times my laptop appears to have crashed and am using an older one that was a spare. Have got it working well speed wise but the problem is the keyboard has some loose keys and am constantly trying to reinstall them with no success. So posts like this which have so many words could take a while.

There's really no cliffhangers in this show but we ended off episode four with Song-Ah meeting Joon-Young at a restaurant after a recital where she was his page turner. Joon-Young had been under the impression Song-Ah wasn't a fan of his music which was far from the truth, he had overheard a conversation she had but it was actually her fellow intern Han-Ne who had that opinion. It's hard to say where these two may be going and am talking about a relationship. Joon-Young to me has secretly fallen for Song-Ah, she respects him to no end but not in the romantic sense. Those bottom two screenshots above are at the Kyunghoon Foundation office where Song-Ah is an intern, she may not have a future as a violinist so it'd be such a blessing if she could obtain a job there.

As you can see a pianist fainted at a rehearsal which was to be for the foundation's 15th anniversary concert. Song-Ah is the liaison to Joon-Young and she originally was to set up a trio concert for him but not sure that'll be taking place. That's because Joon-Young just began a sabbatical, he's been performing concerts for seven years straight all over the world and really needs a break. Song-Ah's mission was to get him to replace the ailing pianist for the anniversary concert but it was to no avail. The music to be performed was a piece of Brahms' who Joon-Young for some reason refuses to play. These days he does but at one time he would play the music of the famed musician, small bits of why he no longer will play that music have been revealed here and there but no definite reason yet.

So at the concert the younger pianist Seung Ji-Min performed the composition, he's really become famous and has eclipsed Joon-Young in popularity. He was at the concert with Jung-Kyung and can't quite put my finger on her yet which is who does she love more, Joon-Young or Hyun-Ho who is a cellist who also performed at the concert. Appearing in the audience was Song-Ah who just happened to have a seat next to Joon-Young and noticed them how jealous Jung-Kyung is of her. Song-Ah arrived alone for she couldn't get either of her best friends Min-Jeong or Dong-Yun to go with her. Actually she couldn't contact either one and there was a dastardly reason for that happening.

After the performance the three along with Hyon-Ho went to the small cafe below Dong-Yun's office'workshop. He runs a small company that restores and repairs violins, he's an expert at the instrument as he tutored Song-Ah and without his help she may not have passed the audition but then again it took her four times. Song-Ah still couldn't contact either of her friends and it never occurred to her the pair may be together.... that's the duo right above! Joon-Young had left to use the men's room and he noticed the above scene, that night the pair spent rolling in the sheets took place two days prior. As Joon-Young was listening to the pair talk who should try to enter the hallway but
Song-Ah and there was no way Joon-Young could let that happen. He held the door for a few moments to the bewilderment of Song-Ah but what a nice person Joon-Young is, to me he was protecting Song-Ah from hearing her friends talk but soon she won't share my opinion.

**** Took a small break and viewed the next two half hour shows. Music is still the major them though the romance stories are growing....

Before Song-Ah entered the hallway her friends had gone away, neither knew Joon-Young had been listening in and shortly after Dong-Yun arrived at the small cafe below his office. Though he doesn't play the violin as much these days or at least in public Dong-Yun is still a well known musician, Hyun-Ho seemed especially happy to see him. Of course at the table was Song-Ah who for now remained clueless about the tryst between her two best friends. After the mini party Song-Ah joined him in his loft to pick up her repaired violin, of course Dong-Yun couldn't say a word about their torrid night but it won't stay a secret much longer. Seoul is  massive city but have you ever noticed in dramas how the stars keep running into each other on the busy city streets?

That's happened many times in this series already and think Joon-Young is always happy to bump into Song-Ah, he's rapidly falling for her and surprised the feeling isn't mutual. Joon-Young has now officially begun his one year sabbatical but the only thing on his mind seems to be taking a rest but have a feeling many things will interrupt his leave and one immediately did. Joon-Young went to college due to his family being poor, he received a scholarship from the Kyunghoon Foundation so he's had to do some promotional work over the years for them which has never bothered him. There has been a new request which is to have a answer and question session at the Hankook Arts Elementary School where Joon-Young had attended with Jung-Kyung. He wouldn't have to play the piano and this time he didn't have much say in the matter as the request was from the Kyunghoon credit card division which funds much of the foundation's budget. The event though doesn't take place until the next recap.

Haven't discussed Kyung-Jung's mother all that much in these posts because just drips and drabs of details come out. But above is Kyung-Jung along with her grandmother Na at a small ceremony as it's the 14th year since the mother passed away. The foundation is named after the mother, she was a piano player whom Joon-Young had high respect for. The anniversary date of the death was July 15th and it also happens to be the date of something else. You can see that above as at the foundation the staff threw a small birthday party for Song-Ah who turned 29, she had no special plans for the evening save to go out with her two best friends. After the office party Song-Ah stuck around to practice her violin playing and she's been slacking off on that. Noticed too that Song-Ah spends so little time with her family, we saw them in episode two but since then for a total of one minute.

As you may have guessed those birthday plans with her two mates didn't turn out to be a joyous occasion. Dong-Yun had been running late so he told Song-Ah he'd catch up with her whenever, that left Song-Ah with her best female friend Min-Seong who just couldn't hold her secret in any longer. She was in tears when she met up with Song-Ah and after that they streamed out much harder. Things like that happen which is that Dong-Yun and Min-Seong spent a night together, they had dated for a while so nothing happened then? Song-Ah had no clue about the night her friends spent together and was at a loss on what to say or do, she was so distraught too but not to the extent Min-Seung was and she tried to console her friend. That incident happened towards the end of the sixth episode, in the next two shows Song-Ah has remained a bit 'cold' to her friends, Dong-Yun didn't realize that the cat had been let out of the bag and had been so confused about Song-Ah's attitude towards him.

After she left the office to meet up with Min-Seung Song-Ah had been followed by Joon-Young who was worried about how she would take the news of her best friends sleeping together. If you haven't surmised Song-Ah has had a long time crush on Dong-Yun who never realized it. Joon-Young did early on though and watched Song-Ah with Min-Seung from the shadows, he later escorted her back to the foundation's office where Song-Ah had left her violin. That's when it came out that the secret was known by Joon-Young who thought was doing a favor to Song-Ah by not saying anything. To me he did the right thing but not to Song-Ah who was a bit upset that Joon-Young didn't tell her immediately about what he knew. Really not sure why Song-Ah was so disappointed with her new friend and that scene ended these two episodes.

Speaking of birthdays Eun-Bin celebrated her 28th last Saturday, with all that was going on with my unrepairable laptop forgot about it. But will try to have a regular post for her soon, she just looks so attractive in this show and to me she has an excellent shot at making the top ten for this year's faves list. Below this is the recap for the next two half hour shows, bit more romance is creeping in but also the musical angle increased.
