"Do You Like Brahms?" drama: Episode's nine and ten recap

Air Dates: August 31st until October 20, 2020  Monday and Tuesdays at 10:00 pm on SBS
Ratings for these two episodes, 4.5 and 5.8%
Those ratings equaled a little over a million viewers

Main Cast: The college referred to is Seoryeong University, a very prestigious music school though it does have many other programs.

Park Eun-Bin as Chae Song-Ah.... 'Chae' sounds quite a bit like the Korean word for sorry and she constantly has to tell others it's her real name. Song-Ah is 29 and graduated from the university at 22 with a business degree. However she hasn't had a steady job since then as her first love was playing the violin. After four attempts she was finally accepted into the school's musical program, she's finished three years yet is still not a very accomplished player.

Kim Min-Jae as Park Joon-Young.... He's an award winning pianist and the same age as
Song-Ah. He too graduated from Seoryeong University and for many years has been touring the world performing concerts. He's a very respected pianist yet has returned to the university for their graduate program but see no reason why.

Lee You-Jin as Yoon Dong-Yun.... Friend of Song-Ah's and went out briefly with Min-Seong. We didn't see him in this first episode as he was in Italy but has just returned in this show. He owns a violin shop though doesn't play much these days.

Bae Da-Bin as Kang Min-Seong.... Song-Ah's best friend who is going to the same college, she's getting her Masters in Chemistry.

Park Ji-Hyun as Lee Jung-Kyung.... She's just returned from America where she tried so hard to become a professor of music at some colleges but failed. She's a violinist whose mother died when she was fourteen, she's been semi-dating Hyun-Ho though she secretly wishes to be with Joog-Young

Kim Seong Cheol as Han Hyun-Ho.... He too has just returned from America and is a talented cello player. He's best friends with Joon-Young and has been dating Jung-Kyung but he's more serious about their relationship than she is.

Lee Ji-Won as Kim Ha-Nae....Also a violinist who is seven years younger than Song-Ah but both have just started at a Summer internship for the Kyunghoo Foundation.

Seo Jung-Yeon as Cha Young-In.... Manager of Song-Ah and Ha-Nae at the foundation.

Choi Dae-Hoon as Park Sung-Jae.... Employee at the foundation.

Ahn Sang-Ein as Jung Da-Woon..... Another foundation employee

Ye Soo-Young as Na Moon-Sook.... Director of the Kyunghoo Foundation and whose daughter died in 2006 who was the mother of Jung-Kyung.

Yoon Chan-Young as Seung Ji-Min.... Very talented younger popular pianist

Once again didn't add in any new characters though we were slightly introduced to someone in this recap who may added soon, also didn't have to edit any of the bios. This drama won't go down as being an all time fave but can't think of the last time I was eagerly waiting for an episode to air. That's been the case for this show which I've truly enjoyed but will remain unknown to most viewers as these recaps get the barest of views. This series will be an extreme rarity as I'll keep up with the shows and have a pair of these posts every week. Bit more romantic storylines have been added in to each episode yet then again in this recap all six major characters are so depressed about love but at least music still is the main focus of this drama.

Not exactly a cliffhanger  but this show began where the last one ended, with Joon-Young at the Hankook Arts school giving a question and answer session, he'll also be performing a song. That's even after Joon-Young started his sabbatical, he just can't refuse any request from the Kyunghoon Foundation who sponsored the show for they paid his way through college. Wasn't mentioned once in these two episodes nor has it been up to this point. But am wondering why Joon-Young is taking a leave from playing the piano? He's slightly burnt out but not to a great extent and as we'll soon see he does need money, may touch on this again in the next post. For the performance song Joon-Young had asked Song-Ah what she wanted to hear, she picked a selection from Chopin and missed picking that up in the previous episode. But just before Joon-Young made his way to the piano who should he notice in the hall's background but Jung-Kyung who had arrived late.

So instead of Chopin Joon-Young began to play 'Traumerei' by Schumann as it had been 'their song'. Song-Ah was a bit bewildered at what Joon-Young was playing, that was until she noticed at the back of the hall stood Jung-Kyung and sadly understood. Up until now it had been Jung-Kyung that had been jealous of Song-Ah and her growing friendship with Joon-Young, now it appears the tables have been turned. But not to Joon-Young as after the performance he had a mini discussion with his ex-love. To him their short fling is history and Jung-Kyung should remain with Hyun-Ho who has proposed to her. But that's a bit of a farce, we've known that Jung-Kyung has had no intention of settling down with him and during their discussion she told Joon-Young she loved him! That didn't throw him for too much of a loop as Joon-Young truly has no interest in getting back with her and in no uncertain terms rejected her on the spot which she really deserved.

Jung-Kyung is such an unlikable character but she's had a tough life to an extent which has been a major reason for her attitude. Will hold off with Song-Ah and Joon-Young for a while and talk about her along with what took place with Hyun-Ho, not all good but perhaps things may be looking up for him by the end of the show. As you can see below Jung-Kyung delivered a killer blow which is that she wants to end the relationship with Hyun-Ho, he pleaded slightly with her but to no avail. As mentioned what an unlikable person Jung-Kyung is, while it's true she's had some tragedy in her life that doesn't always make what she does right. She took Hyun-Ho's engagement ring that she had been wearing and left it in a glass of Soju(!), someday her actions may come back to haunt her. But to me Jung-Kyung leaving is not a bad thing as his life has been stuck in neutral because of her.

Later that evening Jung-Kyung told her grandmother Na about the breakup, Na is the director of the Kyunghoon Foundation. Couple other things arose during that conversation about the breakup, one was that Jung-Kyung had been planning on applying to be a professor at Seooryeong University, she's got a Masters from Julliard. However Na told her granddaughter to nix those plans as she's on the board of directors for the foundation and Na is expecting her to become a full time worker there. What grandma says goes so for now Jung-Kyung will obey her wishes. About the breakup, Na did tell her that it was a good thing with Hyun-Ho being a 'commoner' though the way she talked wasn't too convincing to me and that ended being true. For now Hyun-Ho has no plans for his immediate future even though he is a superb cello player. His parents own a busy convenience store and he's been helping them out but shouldn't it be time for him to concentrate on music full time?

That's what Na thought also and in a surprise move visited Hyun-Ho at his store. She told him about a professor at the university who is about to retire, there will be an opening and he'd be perfect for the position. Hyun-Ho was a bit leery about that as why would they choose him over so many other qualified teachers? None of us knew it nor do I bet Jung-Kyung did too but Na has been on
Hyun-Ho's side for a long time and was impressed how he came from such a poor background to become such an excellent cello player. Na can put in a good word for Hyun-Ho when he applies, now he's quite interested and was going to pursue that professor position. But what baffles me is that no mention of it was made in the next two shows and seemed like it'd make for an interesting storyline as perhaps Jung-Kyung will still apply for the job.

That should cover most of what took place between the pair or should I say ex-pair. Wouldn't call it a fight but after the performance at the Hankook Arts school Song-Ah and Joon-Young went a few days without talking to each other. It was mainly Song-Ah's doing as when the pair were leaving the school they had a small discussion on one of the questions a student asked. They had wondered if having a dream and working harder then anyone else will make them a better musician than someone with natural talent. That was a poser for Joon-Young who said hard work is important but in the end talent usually wins out. Talent is something Song-Ah does not have, though not an excellent violinist she's had to work so hard to get where she's at, does that mean she should give up on her dream if a player with more talent will always outshine her? Wasn't much Joon-Young could say to those statements a perturbed Song-Ah dashed away but Joon-Young is a person who never carries a grudge.

Not going to talk about Song-Ah's best two friends Min-Seong and Dong-Yun much in this recap as neither was on screen too often. You may(not) recall the pair had a one night stand and since then the trio haven't been as close, Min-Seong had hoped to begin going out with Dong-Yun again but she was shot down badly. As mentioned Song-Ah had been a bit peeved with Joon-Young's views on what it takes to be a successful musician but as usual he wasn't upset with her comments. The next time the pair hooked up was at a recital for a teen prodigy who plays the violin superbly but what arrogant young female she was. The girl's name was Su-An and just minutes before the recital was to begin she realized that she had left her shoes at home. Coming to the rescue was Song-Ah who wore the same size and let Su-An borrow her's. Not a word of thanks came from the girl's mouth and she made some uppity comments about her and Hae-Ne, she's Song-Ah's partner intern who organized the show. It was all their boss Cha could do not to punch the girl in the mouth.... wish she did!

During the performance Joon-Young was stuck sitting next to Jung-Kyung, he didn't say a word to her and soon the whole world may be taking his lead. But during this time is when we saw a few subtle incidents, small but yet endearing ones which has made this drama so special. There was a gap in the stage curtain, sitting there was Song-Ah wearing Su-An's slippers and she was looking quite glum. Noticing that was Joon-Young who could care less about the young violinist and like so many others was furious with her snotty attitude. After the show there was a small greeting session which Song-Ah couldn't attend due to her wearing the slippers! Someone upstairs doesn't seem to like her too much but at least someone on Earth does. Of course it's Joon-Young who walked Song-Ah to the bus stop after the concert, on the way he gave her a CD.

That CD was one she had given Joon-Young a few episodes back to autograph but at the time he didn't have a permanent marker. So he signed it at home and gave it to Song-Ah that night, what a nice yet simple message he wrote which was 'To violinist Song-Ah'. That brought a tear to her eyes as he's realized Song-Ah may not have as much talent as everyone else but has worked so hard at practicing and considering the late start she got Song-Ah is a decent player. For the most part that ended the pair of shows, taken me a while but realize that not every single detail needs to be explained for that's what the screenshots are for plus don't want to spoil things in case you do plan on viewing this series. Actually there is one more event which I would rather touch on in the next recap. That has to do with Joon-Young's finances and how much he's struggling, knew he had some money issues but not to the extent he has them.

Blogger has finally got rid of their old version called Legacy and now we have no choice but to us the new one. This is the first post I've written up and don't think the changes will affect me too much as my posts and the theme to this blog are fairly simple. From what I've read though uploading many pics at once has been one of the major issues, let's hope these forty screenshots below uploaded correctly. Am about to write up post #2 with the new version, that's the next post which is the recap fr the next pair
of episodes.
