"Watashi no Otto wa Reitouko ni Nemutte Iru" drama: Episode one recap

Air Dates: April 10th until May 15, 2021 Friday nights at midnight on TV-Tokyo
Title translates over to My Husband is sleeping in the Freezer.... Subs by Mikilove13

Main Cast: Have just viewed the first two episodes but there shouldn't be many changes that need to be done as it's such a short series.

Yuika Motokariya as Nana Kisaragi.... Nana is mainly a stay at home worker for an online shop selling imported furniture and other items. But her quiet life is suddenly thrown into turmoil as one night she couldn't take the abusive ways of her future husband Ryo and killed him! But things become much more eerie as he somehow has come back to life though his dead body was still stored in a freezer.

Jin Shirasu as Ryo Sato.... Nana's ex-boyfriend and say ex for she killed him in the beginning of the first show! But he somehow came back to life the following day yet his dead body is still in the freezer Nana stored him in, how is that possible????

Yuki Saito as Kujaku.... Middle aged woman who is a mystery writer and lives across the street from Nana. She's also a very prying person who isn't married and claims to have never had a steady boyfriend though in the first show we did see a man come out of her house.

Miyoko Asada as Konome.... Nana's mother who is a psychiatrist and can't stand Ryo.

Sho Aoyagi as Kosuke Karasawa.... Local real estate agent who we met briefly in the second episode and he seems a bit suspicious to me.

Hajime Okayama as Makoto Akutsu.... Private investigator hired by Nana's mother who we only saw for about twenty seconds in the second show.

No wasted time leading up to the plot for this series as the key event took place in the opening three minutes. I'm really enjoying these midnight shows which blow the doors off the majority of prime time series, bet 80% of the dramas I watch these days are late night ones. This is a six episode series so what I'll be doing is three recaps today and then the final three in 2 1/2 weeks. Have just viewed the first two shows but halfway through will be watching the third episode. Definitely a very dark and mysterious drama, have no clue what to expect and my one wish is that it's not all a dream! In a pleasant surprise Yukia plays the main character and I truly need to see more of her dramas, on with the recap.

Nana's reaction to that bottom screenshot was 'Am I Dreaming?' and as mentioned I really hope she doesn't wake up from a dream in the final episode. The action kicked right off as we saw Nana about to be abused again by her live-in boyfriend Ryo, the pair were planning on getting married but no date had been set. That abuse was both physical and sexual, at first Ryo was a decent man in the eyes of Nana but the past month he's really changed. She's became so frightened of the man so Nana had been sleeping on her small sofa, that's what she was attempting to do in the opening scene. During it we witnessed Ryo violently throwing Nana to the floor and having his way with her, this had been going on for too long and she finally stood up to the psycho.

Not that killing could be considered a positive act but in this case to me Nana's actions were justified. First off Nana clobbered Ryo over the head with a mini statue, while he sat dazed Nana didn't wait around to see him to retaliate and quickly wrapped a power cord around his neck. In his dazed state Ryo had no chance of fighting back and before she knew it Nana accomplished her feat which was the killing of Ryo! What a load that was off of her mind but now the question is what to do with the body? Doesn't appear the couple had a car so her options were very limited, for now Nana felt the safest place to hide the body was in a small freezer located in a shed in her backyard. That's what she did and it was quite a struggle dragging the body there so will it remain in the freezer forever?

Least in a freezer Nana won't have to worry about the body decomposing and smelling her house up which would definitely draw the curiosity of her neighbors. The following morning the most unexpected event took place and even by the end of the third episode we're wondering HOW? What took place was while Nana was fixing her breakfast who should enter the kitchen but the... dead Ryo! How could this be and he looked as normal as ever, also seemed to act a bit nicer. Once Nana had the chance she rushed out of the house to the shed but in the freezer was still Ryo's body. Could it be a ghost or possibly a Doppleganger, Nana is totally clueless about what's going on.

On her way back to the house from across the street Nana heard her neighbor calling her. It's a middle aged woman named Kujaku who is a popular mystery writer and claims never to have had a boyfriend. While the were chatting out of the house came Ryo, Kujako could see him so at least Nana knew she wasn't hallucinating but then again that could be worse. Ryo ended up going over to the woman's house to fix her stereo where they also had a chat, got the impression that Kujako didn't care too much for the man who only works a few nights a week doing office cleaning. Another person who doesn't know what Nana sees in him is her mother Konome who has her own psychologist's office. Nana went to visit her while Ryo was at her Kujaku's house, seems mother and daughter aren't all that close.

Final mini segment, an episode is only 23 minutes long so had to stretch things out a bit. In the second show we do learn much more about the background of how Nana and Ryo met which may be setting up another mystery. In the final few minutes Nana was of course perplexed on what to do and was it possible that Ryo had come back to life? Obviously things like that don't happen in everyday life but Nana thought perhaps she wasn't entirely successful with her killing of Ryo so to her what needs to be done is to somehow kill the man again but can you do that do someone who is already dead?

Halfway through viewed the third episode and the ending of that one has answered a few questions. But it's also raised many more and am hoping they don't zip too quickly through the action but there may be no choice as this series is just six episodes. Next two posts are the recaps for the second and third shows.
