Reinoryokusha Odagiri Kyoko no Uso: episode 5 synopsis and review

 After a promising 4th episode bit of a step back this time around, while even though every episode has been an enjoyable watch, this one was too, just has slipped a bit into mediocrity and while not completely boring hasn't been as interesting as it should be. This last episode dealt with a case of pyrokinesis, one night an unassuming man thwarted an attempted purse snatcher but lighting him on fire and was witnessed by many people, sort of became a minor hero and was quickly recruited to face off against Kyoko on her TV show. Of course as they always do Kyoko and Taniguchi do some scouting before hand to find out his tricks, seems that it's quite easy to prepare things to catch fire in advance as that's what the man had done to the purse snatcher and also a few other things in his life, some of them were do impress his son. Kyoko found out his secrets and was able to prevent him from doing his fire trick on the show but secretly used his tricks for herself and was able to light many objects on fire, now she's known for being more than a psychic.

 That was really just the gist of what happened for the 5th episode, really was a letdown as this drama has so much potential and just misses the mark too often, more than anything else found myself bored with this last show, kept hoping something interesting would happen and it never did. So far even though I haven't given it high marks still has been a decent watch, nothing spectacular or original but would recommend it, just be warned that at times it can be a bit boring and doesn't live up to the promise it shows on most of the cases Kyoko tries to 'solve'. Going to watch the last 4 episodes but don't think I'll give a review for each of them but will come back to give a final review of the show, really hoping it'll improve but not really positive it will, check out the next 2 posts for a bunch of screenshots of Satomi and Yuko from this episode.

 As mentioned bit of a so-so episode was the last one, Satomi was fine but had said in her previous post about the drama that her character Kyoko was getting a bit stranger but also funnier, not for this show though as she really was a bit subdued, maybe that's what hurt this latest episode.

 Usually like to keep the reviews somewhat brief and simple, not always easy to do but in the case of this drama it's quite simple to do as the plots and story are far from complicated and the cast is really small, only two major characters so far which makes reviewing the show a bit easier than most dramas.
 Bit of a better episode this time as Kyoko and her sidekick Taniguchi investigate a possible poltergeist at a junior high school, it only appears in the girls basketball team's locker room, rumor was that it was the ghost of someone who had been bullied and died in a locker. The girls team is very good as they've won a few championships and are on their way to winning another one but the poltergeist has thrown the team into turmoil, they are very scared of it and what it's been doing and their minds are not on the game as much, could that lead to the end of their basketball dynasty? Of course Kyoko doesn't believe it's the work of a ghost but she actually saw the work of it first hand, mops flying around, CD players just turning on by itself with it not being plugged in and other various things which frightened her to no end even though she didn't believe it was a ghost. Also she had to prove what was really the cause of all these strange events as she was being challenged by a professor who didn't believe she was a real psychic and was going on her show to prove she was a fake.

 As it's been every episode so far Kyoko proves what actually happened, not by her psychic powers as she really is a fake one but by her extraordinary methods of deduction, she proved that the poltergeist was not real but the work of two mothers who had their own separate reasons for causing these strange events. And of course on Kyoko's TV show when given the opportunity to prove that her detractors were wrong about her or guilty of certain actions she always takes the high road, instead of making them look bad she ends up making them look good or have them actually being a victim, she is quite a softie and not sure what her reason is for being like that if there actually is a reason for it.

 Yes, this was better than the last two episodes but still lacking just that something, interesting is one thing that is lacking a bit, shows are enjoyable and have turned funnier but very thin storylines. Also there are two things that haven't been fully worked out yet, Kyoko's brother is in the hospital and we only see him at the end of the show, why is he there and could she actually be doing all these psychic things for him? Also Taniguchi works with S at the police station, her main assignment for him is to get Kyoko to join them working on strange, unsolved cases, not sure at all where this minor storyline is going and whether she will end up joining the force. Oh well, not a rave review by far but still have found myself enjoying this series, nothing earth shattering but so far a solid and funny show, one that has the potential to get better but there's only 5 more episodes to go.  Kyoko seems to be going to the extremes the last 2 episodes, she's acting much more goofier, Satomi really can be a funny actress and yet more serious as the endings seem to be taking on a harder edge, though not a great drama as my reviews have been noting it's really worth a watch if you're a Satomi fan.

Reinoryokusha Odagiri Kyoko no Uso: episode 3 synopsis and review

 Another so-so watch this time from the drama, bit better than episode two but the storyline really didn't go anywhere. Kyoko's show put out a challenge to it's viewers to send in some real ghost photos and the winner(s) would appear on a show with her, many photos were sent in but none of the, appeared to be real and this storyline really didn't go any further. The real plot of this show ended up being the disappearance of a bride who was about to get married, could it have been ghosts as she seemed to simply vanish. Of course that wasn't the case, but if not abducted by ghosts what happened to her? The bride had originally enlisted the help of Kyoko and Taniguchi for what may have been a ghost case but in reality it's that she was being stalked by her ex boyfriend, she wouldn't admit it but Kyoko with her keen eye of deduction had already figured it out before she had met her. And the disappearance of the bride was easily explained as she was secretly hiding out with a fiend of hers which all came out when she appeared on Kyoko's TV show.

 Seems like a short review, is that way because even though it was a fun watch, this episode was funnier by far than the first two, really weak story this time around as them chasing ghosts could have made for an interesting show but never really went that route. Comparisons to the Trick series weren't as strong this time around, perhaps they need to get back on that track, as mentioned it was a fun watch and better than episode two but all in all was really just an average show. There's 9 episodes in all of this drama, I'm through 1/3 of it now with some mixed results to date, an enjoyable watch but seems as though it should be a bit better, there's still time to get more interesting and really hoping that'll be the case.
