"My Perfect Stranger" drama: Episode fourteen of sixteen recap

Air Dates: May 1st until June 20, 2023 on KBS 2, Monday and Tuesdays nights at 9:45 pm
Director: Kang Soo-Yeon, episodes are 65 minutes in length and subs done by iTs
Rating for this episode: 4.5%, not high ratings as KBS2 is a cable network which means the numbers are actually very respectable and were very consistent.

Main Cast: This drama was originally scheduled to air in the Autumn of 2022 but got pushed back twice. Have been looking forward to this series as it stars my second favorite Korean actress who is Jin Ki-Joo and hasn't seen her in any show for two years. Writing much of this up after viewing the first episode, there will be a lot of editing to the characters and more of them will be added in. This is a time travel drama, it began off in 2021 when the main male star Hae-Jun found a car that can travel in time either forwards or backwards! But think most of the drama will be set in 1987 and it could be nostalgic for any older K-drama fans who may visit here.

**** When Yoon-Young was transported back to 1987 it was the evening of May 9th, dates will be important as a serial killer murders his first victim on May 14th.... or will he be stopped????

Kim Dong-Wook as Yoon Hae-Jun.... 32 year old KSBC anchor who one night happened to find this time travel car at the entrance to a tunnel! He believed in only facts but thought why not read the user manual to see if this car could travel in time... it could as Hae-Jun went to the year 3089! Shortly after returning to the year 2021 Hae-Jun took another trip and this time to 2037, what he found out is one of the main stories to this series. Hae-Jun discovered he was murdered in 2022 by a serial killer and went to visit this killer in prison upon returning to 2021. This man Go wasn't the true killer of many people way back in the year of 1987 but had been framed for the killings, Hae-Jun believed this man and to clear his name and also to save his own life Hae-Jun went back to the year 1987 to find out who the killer really was and to possibly stop the murders. The location will be the smallish country city of Woojung.
**** Did learn in the 14th episode that in Korean Hae can mean Greeting while Jun can mean Happiness

Jin Ki-Joo as Baek Yoon-Young.... Editor in chief for a very popular woman author of murder novels though Yoon-Young seems to do most of the work. In the first episode she was fired by this author who was named Mi-Sook and it had to be a relief to be fired! Right around the time of Yoon-Young being fired her mother killed herself and she blames herself for the death, also her alcoholic father. A few days after her mother's death Yoon-Young was wandering near a tunnel when the time travel car driven by Hae-Jun came close to hitting her, at the time the machine was set to travel to 1987 which is where the pair ended up at. Of course Yoon-Young thought it was a dream but when she realized she had travelled back in time she was thrilled! The second main story will be of  Yoon-Young stopping her parents from meeting each other and getting married, if so what will happen to her???? Like Hae-Jun's story it will be set in the smallish city of Woojung. In the third episode Yoon-Young began to impersonate as a high school student to get closer to her mother. Yoon-Young is around thirty in age but claimed to Hae-Jun she could pass for being 22, she told everyone she had to stay back a few years because of family problems.

**** The above two are from the year 2021 but most of the action will take place in 1987, here are the main characters from that year. The location is a smallish city named Woojung-ri.

Seo Ji-Hye as Lee Soon-Ae.... In 1987 she was 18 in age and the top girl in her senior high school class. However she had no true friends and spent her time writing stories as she was such a fan of novels. Soon-Ae is actually Yoon-Young's mother and now that she somehow ended up in the year 1987 she's trying to prevent Soon-Ae getting married to Baek. So you have to wonder if Yoon-Young is successful would that mean she never existed?

Lee Won-Jung as Baek Hee-Sub.... Yoon-Young's father though he too was only eighteen in 1987. He was a bit of an innocent lad and actually was quite nice back in 1987, Hee-Sub loved music but never began a band. He eventually became such an alcoholic and that was one of the reasons for Soon-Ae committing suicide in 2021. Hee-Sop is also a new transfer student at Woojung high school, he began on the same day Yoon-Young did.

Hong Seung-An as Baek Yu-Sub.... Hee-Sub's older brother who attends college in Seoul where he lies in a boarding house and also works PT at a leather factory. He does visit Woojung on the weekends to see his brother and is another suspect in the killings, the pair of brothers have quite a colorful past.

Park Soo-Hyung as Hyung-Man.... Soon-Ae's father who owns a combination tea shop, general store and bus stop for travelling to and from Seoul.

Kim Jun-Young as Ok-Ja.... Soon-Ae's mother and has two other children.

Hong Na-Hyun as Lee Kyung-Ae.... Soon-Ae's 22 year old sister who works at a hair salon. She loves to party and for so long had dreams of being in the Miss Korea pageant! In the seventh episode Kyung-Ae was supposed to be the second victim of the still unknown killer but that was thwarted by Hae-Jun, besides that show she may not have much screen time.

Kim Ye-Ji as Kim Hae-Kyung.... Friend of Soon-Ae's, like Hae-Kyung the other girls Soon-Ae hangs out with none of them are 'true friends' and all love to party which at times has gotten Soon-Ae into trouble. On the left below is Hae-Kyung, the other two are her cronies Eun-Ha in glasses and Yu-Ri, all bully Soon-Ae.

Ji Hye-Won as Ko Mi-Sook.... Another 'friend' of Soon-Ae's who we met near the end of the second episode. She's the same woman who became a popular writer many years later and of all things Yoon-Young was her editor in chief! Mi-Sook's first novel was a huge hit but she had actually stolen the story from Soon-Ae who never said a word. Mi-Sook was such a creep back in 1987 and was even worse in 2021! Mi-Soon does come from a very wealthy family so her snobbery began on the day she was born!

Kim Yeon-Woo as Ko Min-Soo.... Mi-Sook's older brother and the same man Hae-Jun met in 2021. In that year Ko had just been released from prison after serving 34 years for murders he never committed. Though innocent for those crimes Ko is still such a creep who may have raped some girls back in 1987 and almost did so to Yoon-Young! He was arrested for the murders in episode eigth but released in the 14th show.

Choi Young-Woo as Dong-Sik.... Hee-Seop's tough uncle who is a detective. We learned in the third show Hee-Sop's parents are dead and he's now moved in with his uncle. Baek is married with two young children.

Joo Yeon-Woo as Yoo Bum-Ryong.... High school student who became Hee-Sub's first friend in Woojung and we didn't meet him until the third episode. Bit of an oddball who is on the suspect list of some upcoming murders! Sadly he was murdered at the end of the twelfth episode by the unknown killer but he did save Soon-Ae in the process.

Jung Ga-Hee as Lee Joo-Young.... We met her in the fourth episode, she's attending school at Seoul University. Joo-Yung arrived in Woojung on May 12th, that's her below on the right. She's going to be a student teacher at the high school working with Hae-Jun. He knows that on May 14th she'll be the first victim of the killer, can he possibly prevent it? That happened and on May 15th Lee returned to Seoul.

Kim Jong-Soo as Yoon Byung-Gu.... Principal of the Woojung high school, on the left above and his son was attending school in America but returned to Korea in episode eight.

Jeong Jae-Kwang as Yoon Yeon-Woo.... The son of the above man who has just returned to Korea after attending an American university for three years. Yeon-Woo is very intelligent and has been asked by Hae-Jun to fix his Time Machine car, he's on the right below. There's one other common link between them which is that he's.... Hae-Jun's future father!

**** The below group of characters we met in the first episode who are from the year 2021, unsure if we'll be seeing much more of them as most of the drama takes place in 1987.

Lee Ji-Hyun as Lee Soon-Ae.... Yoon-Young's mother and the pair didn't get along so well, it was a reason for Soon-Ae committing suicide in the first episode.

Lee Kyu-Hoe as Baek Hee-Sop.... Yoon-Young's father who is such a waste as all he does is drink, him and his wife lived off what their daughter sent them in cash and he's the other main reason Soon-Ae killed herself.

Kim Hye-Eun as Go Mi-Sook.... Popular writer of murder mysteries, Yoon-Young was her editor who seemed to do most of the work until she was fired in the first show. Mi-Sook also lived back in Woojung in 1987 and had known Yoon-Young's mother, actually she stole the story for her first novel from her!

Im Jong-Yun as Ko Min-Soo.... Man who was accused of killing many people in the small city of Woojung back in 1987. However Go was innocent and after 34 years is about to be released from prison. No one had listened to Ko's pleas for all those years until Jae-Hun visited him the day before his release and has vowed to discover who the real killer was.

Whew, big cast and sure more characters will be introduced so that section above will be increasing for the first few shows and of course will also be updated.

Links to the previous recaps, may help to read a few of them and especially the first.

Short promo video for the fourteenth episode.

It's not that I get sad or bummed out but do hate when a series I've enjoyed is complete and this one will be in just a few days. Didn't read any reviews or the synopsis too closely so wasn't sure what to expect and only knew it was a time travel drama. It has turned out to be much better than expected though its not going to end up in my top five of all time but to date could be the best series I've seen for 2023. Sure you read the above recap and you really did need to do so as so much happened once again there so won't be enough time to talk about what took place. That last episode did end on an intense cliffhanger as for when Hae-Jun visited Soon-Ae at the hospital he found a note in a basket of fruit which was probably from the person who has killed three and Soon-Ae was almost is fourth victim! That note is the second screenshot below and what it means is the killer had been in Soon-Ae's hospital room! Who it could be is unknown for the list of five potential suspects that Hae-Jun created is now down to zero! But we do know two things entering this episode, Mi-Sook is the only person to have seen the killer's face but is now claiming she didn't. A second key bit is that the killer must be known and respected in the small city of Woojung as he was able to visit Soon-Ae which raised zero suspicions. Enough of an intro so let's get to the action and it did end on yet another intense cliffhanger.

If the killer of three can slip in and out of the hospital without raising any suspicions it means it's not a safe place for Soon-Ae, that's according to Hae-Jun. Though still a bit hurt from being attacked by the unknown killer Soon-Ae was released and sent back home, her parents are working on sending her to a better hospital in Seoul which did happen. In the third screenshot Hae-Jun is discussing things with the detective Baek who seems to be the only person at the Woojung police station to have any common sense and wants to see justice done! Say that now but Baek did make a huge mistake in thinking that Hae-Jun was connected with any murders but that's all cleared up now. Woojung was the safest place in Korea as there had been no crimes there for five years, the police chief is trying to squash the stories of the killings as in order to save his and the city's image. He was telling Baek above to cool things and don't alarm the residents as they may go to the media with the stories of the killings which for the most part aren't known outside of Woojung.... yet!

Hae-Jun above was wondering why there were only two detectives working on the case as there's been three killings and Soon-Ae was almost the fourth victim. What baffled and upset Hae-Jun is that after Soon-Ae was released from the hospital there were no police guarding her at her family's home, who knows when the killer will be after her again or possibly anyone else! Baek has secretly told Hae-Jun of what the police chief is doing which of course has infuriated him. Also as the lead detective on the cases Baek had accumulated much evidence but has discovered a lot has been destroyed, by his superiors? For almost a decade Hae-Jun was a reporter and weekend announcer for the news, he knows all of the ins and outs of the trade so if the police chief won't take any action Hae-Jun will!!!! Hae-Jun did explain his plan to Soon-Ae's family and her father wondered would that be a bit too dangerous for his daughter? However Soon-Ae and her mother agree going to the media may be the best way for her to keep safe plus it would alert the other residents of Woojung of the danger they're in and the media may also be key in finding the criminal. So after the chat with Soon-Ae's parents Hae-Jun contacted his future TV station KSBC and they will be traveling to Woojung the next day, it's over a half hour car ride from Seoul. The killings took place on the night/morning of May 16th and 17th, Soon-Ae was attacked on June 7th which is when Bum-Ryong was slain and the date now is June 9, 1987.

We hadn't heard much about Ko the last few episodes, he's such a creep but is innocent of any murders. He's still locked up at the Woojung station for they have no other suspects and they need to prove they're capable of protecting the city so he ended up being the fall guy. In 1988 Ko was sentenced to 34 years in prison for two murders and it was mainly the testimon/lies of his younger sister Mi-Sook that sent him away! Above Baek was trying to talk some sense into Mi-Sook as he knows Ko is innocent or least for the murders. Mi-Sook wouldn't budge from her story and won't even tell Baek the true identity of the killer. So the next day, it's now June 10th, a crew from KSBC arrived in Woojung and one of the reporters became Hae-Jun's producer in 2013. Word quickly got around that the crew was filming all over Woojung and was going to interview Soon-Ae which spurred the police chief to finally do the right thing. He's sent two officers to Soon-Ae's house and the family will have protection around the clock until the killer is found.... or at least until the news team leaves!

Like most things news reporting was quite different in 1987 and there weren't nearly as many cable channels back then. The KSBC team thinks a 3-5 minute story of the killings and lack of police progress should be enough but that didn't satisfy Hae-Jun. He knows what will grab the viewer's attention and that would be a twenty minute story, that length was rare back in 1987 but Hae-Jun has said such a story would be unique and has guaranteed it will be a smash hit. Which it was for it was the key event that led to Hae-Jun's future producer getting a promotion. Hae-Jun told the crew all of the details of the killings and even had some police folders of the case that he had brought back from 2021. As Hae-Jun was saying in the bottom screenshot above Ko was still being held as the one and only suspect but there was no way the man could have committed any crimes. On the night of May 16th Ko had fallen off a bridge and badly damaged his hand, the first murder took place a few hours later. By then Ko had been brought to the hospital and he had an airtight alibi for the first two killings, the news team should put some pressure on the police chief with that info.

That KSBC story ended up being a twenty minute special on the nightly news and was a smash hit! Thanks to the help of Hae-Jun the reporters did such a superb job and it ended up getting Ko released, it also opened the eyes of the residents of Woojung who didn't realize they were in such danger. It also meant some were very leery of each other as could their neighbor be the killer?! While Ko is innocent of the murders he's still such a creep who has assaulted a few women who were too terrified to report him to the police. Ko even attempted to assault Yoon-Young about ten episodes ago but she was saved by Hae-Jun, it was the first of two times he gave Ko a massive beating! Now that Ko has been released the person most frightened is his younger sister Mi-Sook who he's been abusing for the last five years. Luckily arriving to the scene when Ko was leading Mi-Sook into their house was Yoon-Young and whisked her away to safety. Like Hae-Jun and Baek Yoon-Young tried to get Mi-Sook into doing the right thing which was to reveal the identity of the killer but once again it ended in failure. I'm kind of wondering by now did Mi-Sook really see the killer's face? Yes, she was there when the first victim Lee was killed but did Mi-Sook truly see his face as he was wearing a hood.

So for now everything is much calmer in Woojung but then again there is a killer on the loose and the police had no leads in the three murders. They're going to have to change that as there's only a little over two episodes to go! On June 11th Hae-Jun borrowed the car of Yoon who is Hae-Jun's future grandfather and did believe that he had come from the year 2021. For the first time Hae-Jun brought Yoon-Young on a mini date as the pair spent the day at a beach and how much longer will they be in the year 1987? Hae-Jun's Time Machine car still hadn't been fixed by Yoon's son Yeon-Woo and he's been working on it for three weeks now. Of course the pair can't return to 2021 until the car is repaired, the two are getting so much closer which is natural but don't think it'll end up being a romantic ending. In that bottom screenshot above and a few below is Hae-Jun meeting his future mother that evening. Her name is Chung-A who abandoned Hae-Jun shortly after his birth and no reason was ever given but it does soon get revealed. Chung-A owned the Bong Bong Teahouse but is leaving Woojung that night, possibly for Seoul. In that box are some baby clothes which she has been accumulating for when she ever does have a son and don't think she's pregnant or if she is how was that possible? Chung-A had been dating Yeon-Woo but he had been in America for the last three year attending. college. Supposedly they pair hadn't seen each other until Yeon-Woo's return to Korea on May 19th so how could he be the father if she is pregnant and many questions arose in the last few minutes.

Hae-Jun happened to be Chung-A's favorite name, Hae-Jun saw her off on a bus to Seoul but it won't be the last we see of her. The following day is when there was a rebroadcast of that KSBC news special as it was so popular and we saw some tidbits this time around that we weren't aware of. In the news story Hae-Jun claimed he had a good description of the killer and could identify the man if he ever saw him again. That was all a lie as Hae-Jun made those claims in the hopes that it will spur the killer back into action and make Hae-Jun his next target! Dangerous of course for Hae-Jun but he's working with the detective Baek who will be shadowing Hae-Jun night and day, putting Hae-Jun's life on the line will be the best chance to nab the culprit. Later on that evening a person did show up at Hae-Jun's house, of all people it was his future mother Chung-A! Who said she watched the news and saw what Hae-Jun claimed to know, to Chung-A it was just a bunch of lies!!!! For she knew who the real killer was and was leaving Woojung to escape from such a fiend, she even pulled out a red rope from her bag which was the same one the killer had always used. There's no way that Chung-A could be the killer and if not her then who, possibly her boyfriend Yeon-Woo who is Hae-Jun's future father!

Chung-A then left and was followed by Baek which proved to be a huge mistake. Hae-Jun went into his garage to see if Yeon-Woo was still working on his Time Machine car, he wasn't for the car was gone as you can see above. So the car must be repaired and Hae-Jun was at a loss on what to do. He left his house and ended up near the tunnel where he first found the car in 2021. Not positive but think you can only go back in time by entering the tunnel which is why he went there. After going through the tunnel a car came zooming after him, Hae-Jun jumped in front of it thinking the car would stop but it didn't! Hae-Jun was thrown aside but don't think he's too badly hurt and there's only ten seconds to go in the episode. Getting out of the car was the man in the bottom screenshot above, that's Hae-Jun's future father Yeon-Woo and this is the killer of three people?! That ended this show and have to admit I had become leery of Yeon-Woo some episodes ago and there are some questions about him. For instance the first two killings took place on May 16th and 17th, he didn't return to Korea from America until the 19th so had he been hiding out for a week or longer? If so where had he been staying as Yeon-Woo was well known in Woojung, perhaps with Chung-A and if that was the case she just may be pregnant. There's a few other puzzling things and will get to them in the next recap. Just two more episodes to go and the final posts for them should be done a week from now.
