"Furo Girl" drama: Episode four recap

Air Dates: July 15th until August 20th, five episodes at the time of this recap have aired. It's
on TV-Tokyo Wednesday nights at 12:58 am, subs have been done by 'Salaryman Subs'.

Main Cast: This is correct as there's only two characters and really it's mainly just Hinako who is on screen close to 100% of the time. When she interacts with her best friend it's always by video on their cellphones and it could be because of the virus.

Hinako Sakurai as Sayoko Oyumino.... 25 year old OL(supposedly) who is overly obsessed with taking baths! Seems she has only one friend in the world and spends all of her time alone which is fine by her as taking baths is more important than being around humans! The narration is also done by Sayoko as we rarely hear her talk out loud.

Sakurako Konishi as Aino Hiyama.... Sayoko's only friend and she's man crazy, though she has a boyfriend he ignores her and she's always on the hunt for another. The pair went to an unnamed college together.

Another fine episode but have to admit I enjoyed the first three a tad more when Sayako took her baths alone. To date she's had close to 100% of the screen time but not for this episode as her friend Aino may have been the key figure for this show. For the first time the pair got together and in the first three shows they only communicated by their phone's video. Let's get to the 'action' and it's that time of the month for Sayako.

For Sayako 'that time of the month' means to give her bathroom as major cleaning. She does it every day but once a month she goes all out and cleans every nook and cranny. It's that time but just before she could begin Sayako received a call from her best and only friend Aino. To her dismay Aino said she would be at the apartment at any minute, are Sayako's plans for cleaning going to be cancelled? At first she tried to shoo Aino away but to no avail as she brought a bottle of wine and wanted to share it with Sayako.

She resigned herself to the fact Aino wasn't going anywhere, it's fine if she wants to stay but she'll have to watch Sayako clean the bathroom and what an exciting evening that sounds like! Aino watched all of Sayako's prep work and this is where we learned what a fanatic she is about.... Baking Soda! She absolutely loves the stuff and is her second fave thing in the world after taking baths. Sayako uses baking soda in everything from making cleaning solutions to creating drinks and preparing food, most of those recipes are at the TV-Tokyo site. Sayako was so gung-ho about the cleaning, so much that Aino decided to stick around and watch her friend in action.

Sayako is usually a very quiet and demure woman but when it comes to cleaning a bathtub she becomes such a crazed person. She can scrub harder than any one else and when she does Sayako always does a chant along with screaming. She had to apologize to Aino a few times for doing that as she's always cleaned alone and kept forgetting someone was watching her. What a cleaner she is as not one speck of dirt escaped her and it came down to her toughest area.

That area is around the faucets and tap which seem to get dirtier than any other part of the bathtub. Sayako of course used a special creation consisting of baking soda and would use a toothbrush for those areas. Aino wanted to help out so Sayako relented and actually her friend did a decent job with the cleaning. But more importantly it was the chant of 'Shaka Shaka' that Aino used while cleaning, Sayako was quite impressed with the chant and it's one she'll use herself in the future.

The task is finally completed and as Sayako says above those who clean have to take a bath, she'll let Aino have the honor of taking it first. Aino has always been a 'shower girl' but enjoyed her time in the tub immensely, perhaps she too will become a 'Furo Girl'?! While she was in the tub Sayako stood outside the doorway and the pair had a long talk. Aino's main reason for the visit was that once again her boyfriend broke up with her and she didn't want to be alone. If there's one woman not to ask for advice on relationship matters is Sayako who admitted then to Aino she's never had a boyfriend and is totally clueless about men.

No 'man advice' from Sayako though she did give some nice tips to her friend on how to do liven her life up by herself, not spiritually but the fact Aino should like herself for who she is. Plus of course that taking multiple baths a day would be the best way to have a peaceful mind! An episode is a little less than 25 minutes so we've hit the conclusion of this show. As you can see above the pair couldn't let Aino's bottle of white wine go to waste so the duo guzzled it right down along with a plate of shrimp which of course Sayako added baking soda to it's preparation.

Two more episodes to go in this series and while not a must watch have enjoyed this show up until now. These late night Japanese dramas are really my faves, not because they tend to be a bit shorter but because they're usually so quirky, off the wall or/and interesting. Have another one coming up soon which is "Thirteen" and that aired back in June. It was a four episode series with those shows being regular length episodes of 40+ minutes. The bottom screenshot is from a twenty second preview for the fifth episode and that really looks like a quasi-suspenseful show(?).
