SPEC TV movie: synopsis and review

The Public Safety Bureau has set up the Unidentified Crimes Unit a.k.a Mishou in order to investigate special cases which are too much for the First Investigative Division to handle. Mishou has the odd Toma Saya, a genius with an IQ of 201, and Sebumi Takeru, a veteran of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police’s Special Operations Unit. Against criminals with special powers (SPEC) that ordinary people do not have such as stopping time, reading a person’s mind, foretelling the future, Toma and Sebumi set traps by turning SPEC on them and waging dramatic battles. A relationship of trust emerges between the two of them through their repeated deadly struggles with these SPEC holders, and they succeed in defeating their biggest enemy, but … … A year later, when Sebumi, who has taken leave of absence from the Metropolitan Police for eye treatment, returns to Mishou, Ichiyanagi Kenzo and Kikkawa Shu are there. Ichiyanagi has been assigned to be the new head of Mishou in place of the demoted Nonomura Kotaro while Kikkawa was transferred from the Organisational Crime Department. Several days later, a call is placed to Mishou about a bizzare murder case. It was a murder rampage with a machine gun on the streets in broad daylight. The only survivor is a high school girl. Furthermore, that high school girl, Kuon Nozomi, says the criminal who wore black from head to toe, “escaped through teleportation”. Satori’s image is found among the photos of the people involved. Analysing that a fight between SPEC holders had broken out during the day, Toma quickly heads to the police hospital where Nozomi has been admitted. She continues to hide her true intensions deep in her mind. Sebumi who knows about this mind maze, tries to get the real Toma back.... jdramawordpress

Above synopsis on this movie was so good figured I couldn't improve on that one so used it, thanks to who wrote it up at jdramas.wordpress. For those who saw the 2010 series this picks up right where that left off, also continued how good of a drama that was as this movie was also superb and a few questions were answered. Touma(Erika) had always worn that sling during this show's original run but never came out why but it finally did here, she's also a SPEC person which is why she really wanted to work for the unsolved mysteries department. Her power(s) were that she could summon the dead who had special powers and be able to keep them alive so they could use them, she really needed it at the end as there was one person who had some very strong SPEC powers, but actually it came out that it wasn't the ones who had SPEC powers she could raise from the dead but actually anyone who wasn't living, she didn't know that.

Also the strange man dressed all in black was who everyone thought was the real enemy with SPEC powers, he could teleport himself anywhere but it came out after Sebumi defeated him that he wasn't a person with SPEC powers, don't think it was explained enough then how he could teleport himself. Eventually it came out that the real opponent wasn't the man dressed in black nor many of the others with SPEC powers that kept appearing in the movie only to be defeated by Touma, especially at the end but it was a high school girl who's parents had been killed and she was being protected by the oblivious police, even Touma didn't know that the girl had such strong powers. However at the end Touma revealed to all her power of raising the dead as she had to in front of all, it was the only way to defeat her enemy. Right after is when she broke down a tad and said what a burden it was to have that power, one of the dead SPEC person she had risen though had a power to get rid of any SPECs in people which is what he did to Touma, leaving her powerless. Not sure if her powers can come back for at the conclusion of the show in a scene that went straight into the theatrical mivie a trio of powerful SPEC people appeared on the scene, killing one of their police leaders and leaving us wondering what will happen next, don't know yet as haven't seen that movie yet.

Of course this TV movie is recommended and not just because of Erika who can make even so-so watches worth a view but just a solid effort all around. Never knew there were so many with the SPEC powers out there, they seem to come across all of them that do. Ending left us on a cliffhanger for the movie which was released a week after this, bet that'll be good too but haven't seen it yet but will, it's coming out on DVD at the end of September so that will certainly be a must watch. Check out the next few posts for many screenshots of Erika and the rest of the cast from the show.
