That first recap really took something out of me, have never worked harder on one and hope these next few are easier but at least am able to keep them somewhat short. At the top of every recap will be a different video, the one for this post features the young couple of Na-Moo and Nak-Won when they were about fifteen or back in 2006.
There are four time periods in this series, up until the last four minutes the entire setting is the year 2006. So though the two main characters are Do-Jin and Jae-Yi back in that year they had gone by the names of Na-Moo and Nak-Won which isn't too confusing in this recap but by 2011 they had both changed their names which I'll try to keep you aware of. There have been many puzzling things about these first four or so shows but have watched up until the end of the eighth episode so was able to discover some of those confusing tidbits which should make this and the next recap accurate.
Good cliffhanger ended off the previous recap and we'll start right off with that scene. Nak-Won is still relatively new in the town of Gowon and very early on during a rainy night her dog Lucky had disappeared. Nak-Won had went out searching for her beloved pet and her travels brought her to the house of her new friend Na-Moo though she didn't know it was his residence. She found her dog's neck ID at it's gate so Nak-Won began to search the grounds of the house where she discovered a small shed, one that had a trap door which for no good reason she entered which led to a small cellar.
There she found her dog Lucky and also she saw her new friend Na-Moo pounding away at the lock on the cage where it was being held. But before Nak-Won could speak to Na-Moo out of nowhere came his very evil and intimidating father Hui-Jee. That man causes huge fear into the hearts of everyone and that included Nak-Won, have the feeling that if Na-Moo wasn't present the father would have caused great harm to Nak-Won and perhaps even killed her. Not much was said but Na-Moo kept pounding away at the cage which he eventually was able to open.
The father hid it well but he was none too happy that the dog was now free. Hui-Jee had used the excuse that the he had kept the dog locked up as it was roaming the streets plus had tried to bite him when the father tried to help the lost dog. Of course all of what he said were lies and Nak-Won knew that as her dog is rather passive but for the time being there was nothing she could say or do to the father as Na-Moo eventually escorted her home. Nak-Won didn't notice it but in the cage was a 'steel bone' the dog was gnawing on plus nearby were some instruments the father had planned on using to.... dismember the poor dog!? Hard to put the eeriness into words but Hui-Jee's household is one frightening place and you have to feel bad for Na-Moo who is such an upstanding young man.
One other member of the household is Na-Moo's older brother by two years, Hyun-Won. He's cut from the image of his father as the boy is one mean person who is known around town as such a bully. Hyun-Won's father seems slightly proud of him and probably because of his violent ways but tells his son he needs to be more careful in the future to avoid getting arrested. The same night as the above incident Hyun-Won was involved in his own as at his high school he severely beat a fellow student badly by kicking him. But luckily the scene was broken up by Nak-Won's brother Moo-Won who called 911 to send for an ambulance, had he not done that the boy possibly could have died and we;ll be hearing more about this incident in the future.
For some reason the first of four segments is always the longest but it does set the stage for what's coming up. The cast list mentioned that Moo-Won was adopted by Nak-Won's parents but so far that hasn't been brought up by the end of the eighth episode. After the potentially dangerous scene in the basement Na-Moo walked Nak-Won home, the pair stopped for a while where they had their first semi serious talk. Na-Moo is so ashamed of his family and asks Nak-Won to pretend to not know him and perhaps it'd be better in the future if she just ignored him. But there's something so bubbly about her demeanor as she wouldn't listen to Na-Moo's wimpy suggestions, for some reason she really likes Na-Moo and deep down it appeared he was glad she would remain his friend.
Eventually the pair made it to Nak-Won's house which is such an exquisite residence, the complete opposite of Na-Moo's house. There he met the mother who is a very famous actress but wanted to take a mini break from acting which led to the family moving away from Seoul. Her name is
Hye-Won and she's such a sweet person who is immediately attracted to Na-Moo as he's such a polite and intelligent young man of fifteen. She helped dress the would on his right hand though he couldn't tell Hye-Won the injury was from freeing Nak-Won's locked up dog.
Soon the father also made it home, he's a very known lawyer who still works in Seoul and don't think we'll ever get to know the parents all that well before they get murdered. The mother gave Na-Moo a sweatshirt to wear home as it had gotten chilly, it just so happened to belong to the brother Moo-Won. And who should Na-Moo meet on his way home but the brother who asked him what was he doing wearing his sweatshirt? Na-Moo explained it to Moo-Won about him visiting his house but made sure to leave out the part about being Hyun-Moo's brother. That meeting between the two boys had taken place only a few hours after that violent incident at Moo-Won's high school.
We're now in the fourth episode and don't know if I sound it but the show is becoming more enjoyable. What's helping is the time period has remained in 2006 so can just view it without wondering so many questions. Plus the young actors are quite good and have grown a bit attached to them, going to miss the young couple as soon we won't be seeing much of them.
Later that evening Na-Moo's father had returned home where he found his son had also just returned. Hui-Jee wasn't violent towards Na-Moo but wasn't at all pleased with him freeing the dog, Na-Moo does mention about getting beat up in later shows but we've never seen the father lay a hand on him. The following day at school Na-Moo is trying to avoid Nak-Won and being apart from her may be the best for the couple as he had mentioned the previous night. But as I said Nak-Won is such a bubbly and interesting teenager and won't stop from trying to be Na-Moo's best friend as she wouldn't think of distancing herself from Na-Moo as the pair are becoming a tad closer. It's been a short time frame for them as they've probably only known each other for about three days at the most.
Later that night there's a pair of incidents which occur with the first one being a positive one but wonder if down the road it'll have severe implications for Nak-Won's family. The police had paid a visit to her house and it was to thank Moo-Won for calling 911 and reporting that a student was severely injured at school, that call may have been a life saver. Moo-Won wouldn't come right out and say that it was Na-Moo's brother Hyun-Moo who had done the beating but the police had a fairly good idea it was the teen bully and were searching for him to bring him in for questioning. So wonder if that call to save the lad may have put a mark on Moo-Won's family by Hyun-Moo's father. The father Hui-Jee had really preached to his son to be careful if he's going to resort to violence and once the father learned his son was dragged in for questioning he hit the roof.
While the police were visiting the house there was some gruesome action taking place on the other side of town. For the second time we witnessed another murder by Hui-Jee who appeared to be cruising the streets looking for a victim. He passed by a mini bus station where he noticed a young woman waiting for the bus all by her lonesome, Hui-Jee asked for directions and as a way of thanks offered to give the woman a lift home. She naturally refused the offer and Hui-Jee began to drive off but after going fifty yards suddenly threw the car into reverse and roared back to the woman.
Instead of fleeing she just stood there as Hui-Jee jumped from the car and was able to subdue the woman very quickly. We never see any of the murders that Hui-Jee, to date it's been three, but we do see the setup scenes like the above action against the woman and then the aftermath of him disposing of the body and evidence. Hui-Jee had brought the woman to his shed where at the beginning of the recap Nak-Won had visited to search for her dog. It's not the same MO for all of his killings but what Hui-Jee had done was to dismember the woman's body and throw the parts into a huge inferno to get rid of the evidence.
That worked out exactly to plan but there was someone hiding in the shadows who Hui-Jee wasn't aware of. It was his estranged wife Ok-Hee who had gone to the house looking for her daughter, she's fearful for the child's safety and has plans to take her away with her. Ok-Hee never witnessed the actual killing but did see Hui-Jee throwing objects into the inferno, then she put two and two together and knew the objects were body parts.
Hui-Jee had a sense someone else was on the property but never did find his wife. One reason was that he had received a call from the police notifying him that his son Hyun-Moo had been picked up for the beating of the high school student. Hui-Jee was furious with his son but with blood all over him from the killing couldn't go to the station to help his son. There may be no help for Hyun-Moo as he was already on probation and if found guilty could be looking at a prison term even though he's just 17 and still in high school.
On to the final scene and for the first time in these two episodes the action take place in a different year than 2006. It's now 2011 and we see Na-Moo attending a seminar at the police academy though now his name is Do-Jin. At the seminar the professor was discussing his father's case which has become a national story as Hui-Jee had committed the total amount of twelve murders. In the next few shows we keep seeing scenes like this as the time shifts form 2006 to 2011 or 2015, back to 2006 and so on. Where I've become the most confused about is the time when Do-Jin was enrolled at the academy. He started there in 2011 and eventually graduates in 2015 but during the scenes of him training we're never sure exactly what year it is and perhaps it's not overly important.
Still no sign of Ki-Joo who was the main reason for me viewing this drama but we do finally see her again at the end of the next recap. Hope the above wasn't too confusing but don't think it was too bad and the confusion for me is dwindling as the shows go on. Just need to remember that for now there are three time periods plus the two main characters ended up changing their names. But all in all it is getting to be a much better drama which keeps improving as the episodes go on, we're halfway through this mini marathon with two more recaps to follow.
